Leeds United news drops as 50% wage clauses appear, finance expert reacts
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...
Dan Plumley has insisted that all clubs should have relegation clauses in their players’ contracts as Leeds United have done in their fight to survive.
It has been reported that Leeds have included clauses of at least 50% reductions in contracts as they currently sit one spot and one point off survival in the Premier League.
The finance expert admitted that it is the right thing to do in the current climate, with Leeds’ revenue set to lose out by at least 30% if they don’t beat the drop.

“It depends on the contract we’re talking about and it may be for certain players and not others,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.
“The bottom line is the right thing to do in the current climate. If you look at the most recent revenue for Leeds, you’re going to lose about 30% of that if you’re relegated, so balancing that out with some wage reduction clauses is pretty sensible and all clubs should be doing that in the modern-day game.”

This may be one of the very few smart moves that Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta made together before their relationship completely crumbled at Elland Road.
Despite spending very silly money on transfer fees such as the £35million to sign Georginio Rutter, the contracts appear to have been protected.
This could come into play very soon, we hope not.
In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
