Leeds United need to replace Ian Poveda – Paul Robinson
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson was taken by surprise when Ian Poveda left Leeds United to join Blackburn on a season-long loan earlier this week.
Poveda, 21, hadn’t made either of Marcelo Bielsa’s two matchday squads in the Premier League prior to his temporary switch to Ewood Park.
Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson believes Leeds need to replace the former Manchester City attacker before the transfer window closes and feels the loan move is a signal that someone could be coming in.
“They need to replace him,” said Robinson when speaking about Poveda’s loan exit.
“I was surprised they let him go because he’s an impact substitute because of his pace and his directness when he’s come off the bench. He’s good at coming on when they’re chasing the game or need some kind of impetus going forward.
“I was kind of surprised they let him go but obviously it’s a key part of his development. They trust Blackburn – look at what they did with Harvey Elliott and the style of football they play.
“For him, his education and his footballing career, playing week in and week out will do him the world of good.
“I would like him to stay at Leeds and be an impact substitute but that’s another sign they’re going to strengthen.”

Last season, Poveda played 14 times for Leeds in the Premier League, coming off the bench each time.
His only senior starts came in cup games, when Leeds lost to Hull in the Carabao Cup and were beaten by Crawley in the FA Cup.
If Poveda gets plenty of game-time under his belt, this move will be beneficial to everyone involved.
