Leeds United lauded after huge Wilfried Gnonto decision made at Elland Road

Paul Robinson has applauded Leeds United for “protecting their assets” after Wilfried Gnonto signed a new contract at Elland Road.

The Whites announced [31 August] that the 20-year-old winger has signed a new four-year deal until 2028, which is understood not to include any exit clauses [Graham Smyth].

Gnonto has been Daniel Farke’s main man since the new Championship campaign kicked off, notching a goal against Portsmouth in the league opener as well as driving the team forward.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “It’s hugely important for the club. I think it’s important for the club to protect their own assets, too. He had a huge turnaround last season after saying he wouldn’t play in pre-season.

“The manager’s man-management of the player has got the best out of him between then and the end of the season, getting him back to playing. Within 12 months, to get him to sign a new contract shows how good the player’s relationship is with Farke.

“Now, he’s starting every game and playing well. He looks in a really good place, so I’m not surprised they’ve given him a new contract. From the player’s point of view, it’s a reward for him knuckling down, getting his head around the situation, and taking on the challenge.

“From the club’s point of view, they’re protecting their assets, which is a sensible thing to do. With FFP and PSR, giving the player a longer-term contract keeps his transfer value strong should he ever leave.”

Wilfried Gnonto pens new deal at Leeds United

After the departures of Archie Gray, Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville, Leeds fans were desperate for some good news during the summer transfer window.

Although they had to wait until the window slammed shut, Gnonto’s new contract at Elland Road was greeted with a lot of excitement, and the absence of no exit clauses is huge for the club.

With so many other stars leaving West Yorkshire over the last few weeks, the Italian winger has an opportunity to be Farke’s key player, hoping to claim promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking.
