Leeds United face major PSR concern after worrying Marathe comment – Exclusive

Leeds United will have to adhere to the profit and sustainability rules in the Premier League after sealing promotion from the Championship.

Having spent the last week celebrating their Championship success, Leeds will have already turned their focus to the planning required for life back in the Premier League.

Recruitment is going to be crucial at Elland Road, and due to the financial restrictions in the Premier League, the Whites will have to be smart with the business they do in terms of both incoming and outgoings.

However, after a comment made by Paraag Marathe, there is reason for concern at Leeds ahead of the next few months.

Marathe hints at big sales for Leeds this summer

Leeds will reportedly have a budget of £150million to spend on new signings this summer, though they may still have to sell before they can buy.

Marathe, via TEAMtalk, claimed that big-money sales could happen at Leeds, and Paul Robinson emphasised how the Whites are going to have to adhere to the rules to survive in the top flight.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, he said: “FFP and PSR play a huge part in football.  Newcastle, the richest club in the world. Every single week, we’re talking about the potential of losing their best players. And in the same way, Leeds now have to balance their FFP and PSR.

Leeds United had a remarkable campaign in the Championship under Farke.

“You have to cut your cloth accordingly. So Leeds are going to have to cut a certain part of their squad to make the other part of the squad grow. You know, you cut, you look for the lower-hanging fruit.

“So, a club like Leeds coming into the Premier League, the recruitment has to be more intelligent than it’s ever been because of the FFP and PSR rules. It’s killing teams. It’s all about sustainability going forward.

“But Leeds are also now going to have to toe that line. And if that means selling players, the recruitment is going to have to be intelligent, where they sell players of one position at a certain age or a certain age, if they’re through the academy, to balance the books that they have to fit in with the rest of them. And again, that goes back to the point of trying to get into the Premier League harder than ever because you’ve got the FFP and PSR to deal with.”

Leeds need to get rid of deadwood from Elland Road

To survive in the Premier League, Leeds will need many additions to bolster their squad and ensure that they have the depth to compete.

Players like Patrick Bamford could leave, and how they reinvest that money will ultimately determine their success.

These next few months are going to be crucial for the Whites as planning for the new campaign gets underway.
