Leeds United could suffer ‘real blow’ as points deductions mooted at Elland Road

Paul Robinson has suggested that a points deduction could be very harmful to Leeds United if they are unable to avoid breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Although the introduction of Red Bull as minority shareholders will have steadied the funds at Elland Road, Leeds must still raise money in player sales to remain within the limits of PSR.

This could mean the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray and Wilfried Gnonto are all sold this summer, which could leave Daniel Farke with a limited squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “It was always going to be the case with a Championship stay. When a team stays in the Championship or is relegated to the division, if the financial situation isn’t ideal, you’re always at risk of losing your better players.

“The chairman hasn’t hidden that. He’s come out and said that they’ll have to lose a few players, and you can understand that. It’s about how they rebuild with the financial losses, FFP and PSR. A points deduction would be a real blow.

“Sheffield United are starting the Championship with a two-point deduction next season. We know how difficult the Championship is. A points deduction is the last thing Leeds want. They are going to have to sell players, and they will.

“There could potentially be 20 players leave this summer, such as Cody Drameh, Stuart Dallas going into the coaching staff, Ian Poveda, Joe Rodon might get a permanent move, Sam Byram, Shackleton, Jaidon Anthony on loan, Connor Roberts on loan, Luke Ayling joining Middlesbrough, uncertainty around Liam Cooper’s future, and they’ve all been on the fringes of the team.

“Put Archie Gray, Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville into the mix, there’s a huge rebuilding job to do this summer. The trading will be very important to balance the books and have a squad competitive enough to attack the Championship next season.”

Leeds United aiming to avoid PSR breaches this summer

Before the Championship play-off final, the Daily Mail reported that Leeds would need to raise upwards of £100million in player sales, though these numbers will be skewed now with Red Bull’s new investment.

Despite this, Farke will still be expected to draw on his previous experience in the division with Norwich City to boost the Whites back up to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

In other Leeds United news, Goodman has made a promotion prediction should a certain Farke development play out.
