Leeds United could lose up to £7million after breaking news today – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Leeds United could be set to lose up to £7million from the ban of gambling sponsors in the Premier League.

News broke today that top-flight clubs have agreed to ban the sponsors with a transitional period in place for them to be zoned out over the next couple of years.

The finance expert admitted that Leeds will need to find a way through that and adjust to the new regulations with other partners being looked at.

“You’ve got to find a way to replace it,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“If you look at the numbers we can see on that, the West Ham deal is the biggest figure at around £10m, the Leeds one will probably be a bit lower but could be in the region of £6-7million, so it is a significant amount of money whichever way you put it.

“No club wants to lose £7million off their income line, so you’ve got to then adjust to that and it is how you diversify those sponsorship opportunities, how you look to partner up with other businesses.

“We’ve seen clubs sign shorter-term deals so if the worst happened there are exit-quick strategies and they’re looking at other partners.

“It will take some transition and adjustment, but clubs need to find a way through it and there is nothing to suggest that Leeds cannot do it.”

With the 49ers Enterprises likely signing off on their complete takeover in the upcoming summer, we could see a change of strategy in the boardroom.

More American-based companies could be interested in things such as sponsorship, so this may have actually come at a good time for the Whites.

They just need to stay in the Premier League now.

In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
