Leeds United benefit from trend in Jayden Bogle transfer from Sheffield United

Leeds United benefitted from a growing trend of clubs cashing in on players in the final year of their contract with the signing of Jayden Bogle, Dan Plumley has said.

The Whites confirmed the signing of the Sheffield United full-back on Saturday (20 July, official website) in a deal journalist Alan Nixon said would get near £7million with add-ons.

Former Derby County full-back Bogle was in the final 12 months of his deal at Bramall Lane (Sheffield Star) and finance expert Plumley said clubs are far more open to cashing in on their assets with PSR and FFP regulations to satisfy.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Plumley said: “We’ve seen it haven’t we in recent years?

“Partly, let’s just say, because if you can generate some sort of fee during the last year or the last couple of years of a contract then obviously that’s better than letting it run down to nothing.

“And also then when you put the regulations over the top of that, the PSR calculations, FFP and everything that’s in the mix there., if you can get a little bit of money for those players rather than getting none that’s going to help the bottom line as well.

“There’re a lot of things in the mix there but yeah clubs are certainly more wary now than perhaps in years gone by of not letting players run down contracts and if they have to sell in the final year or there’s a release clause in there that means the player has no choice we have seen more of that in the last three to five years I would say.”

Leeds United played a strong hand in Jayden Bogle deal

In the end, it ways looked pretty clear that this is a transfer Bogle wanted and the Blades had to decide between generating a fee or losing the 23-year-old for nothing.

Leeds knew that the relegated South Yorkshire club were in that position and ultimately they were able to get their man, even if the Blades will probably content themselves with the fact they got a figure close to what they wanted.

In this scenario, as Plumley said, Leeds had an opportunity to pounce and clubs are much more likely to do business on players now given the fact they have so many PSR factors to consider.

All in all, it was a savvy piece of business from Leeds and they have a signed a solid Championship performer with a promotion on his CV.
