'Leeds have been linked with another striker' – Exclusive: Pundit says Bielsa wants £17.4m-rated hitman

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has reacted to a report that claims Leeds are looking at Metz striker and Senegal international Habib Diallo as they look to strengthen for the Premier League.

It was reported that Chelsea had a £17.4m offer for Diallo rejected in January but the Metz president has now said the striker is for sale.

Metz have been hit hard by the financial crisis currently engulfing football and Bernard Serin said to France Blue in May: “He is 24 years old, it is time for him to pursue his career elsewhere. Our objective is to transfer Habib Diallo.”

Diallo has scored 12 goals in Ligue 1 this season and has won two caps for Senegal.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “Leeds are looking at another striker, Diallo at Metz. I know Chelsea have looked at him again and Metz are willing to sell.

“Leeds have obviously got a huge scouting network and these are the types of players they’re going for.

“Before they moved for Augustin he wasn’t that well known, but Bielsa obviously recognised talent in him and saw a player he wanted to work with.

“It’s the same with Diallo, he’s a frontman, the only thing he’s lacking is a defensive game, but he’s scored a lot of goals this season and he’s very highly-rated.

“Leeds are now competing with the likes of Chelsea and other top European teams for players like this.

“The president has come out and said they’re willing to sell him. The financial crisis has hit them hard and if they could get €20m (£17.4m) for him then I think it would be a deal they would strongly look at.”

Leeds have an obligation to buy Jean-Kevin Augustin if they are promoted and that would be for a fee around the £18m mark.

However, he hasn’t started a game for Leeds yet and is still an unknown quantity.

Leeds may have a fight on their hands for Diallo but it shows that if they’re in the Premier League they’ll be looking to bring a different calibre of player to Elland Road.
