Exclusive: Paul Robinson claims Leeds ace who was excellent last Saturday will be dropped v QPR

We’re delighted to welcome former Leeds and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds…

Paul Robinson thinks that Gaetano Berardi will be dropped from Marcelo Bielsa’s side to face QPR on Saturday, despite being excellent against Sheffield Wednesday.

Captain Liam Cooper is fit and Robinson thinks he will slot back into the centre of defence alongside Ben White.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds news, Robinson said, “Does Liam Cooper go back in [for QPR] if he’s fit? Yeah, I think so.

“I think Cooper and Ben White have been outstanding this year. I think Cooper fits straight back into that defensive partnership.

“In the last three games the manager’s changed things with three at the back at different times but I think Cooper comes back in as the leader.

“I think Berardi’s done well to be fair. They were defensively tight at Sheffield Wednesday and he was a big part of that. He defended excellently well, he organised them at set-plays… So I think for Cooper to come back in, it certainly wouldn’t be because Berardi has underperformed, it would just be natural selection.”

Cooper played for 14 minutes in the 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday last week but missed the three games before that with injury.

Berardi might yet get a reprieve even if Cooper does come back into the side on Saturday. He’s one of the players in contention for the left-back slot if Barry Douglas and Ezgjan Alioski miss out. Both players are doubts for the game at Elland Road.

Leeds go into the game in third place in the Championship, two points behind West Brom at the top.
