MOT View: Trouble on horizon for Leeds mainstay that could put dent in promotion hopes

Kiko Casilla put in a man-of-the-match performance against Sheffield Wednesday and he’s been a rock all season.

He’s put the huge clanger in last season’s play-off semi-final behind him and he now looks every inch the keeper we thought we’d signed when he arrived in January from Real Madrid.

However, there is trouble brewing.

Casilla was accused of racially abusing Charlton’s Jonathan Leko during the 1-0 loss back at the end of September.

That hasn’t gone away and although the FA hasn’t cited Casilla yet, it looks almost inevitable that they will. These things move slowly and the FA will be making sure everything is in place before it moves.

According to Phil Hay in The Athletic, “its investigation is live and charges are anticipated”.

Casilla is denying all of the allegations but Leko’s story has been backed up in an official interview by another Charlton player, Macauley Bonne, and that could prove damning for Casilla.

The minimum ban for an offence of this kind is six games and there’s no doubt that would be a massive blow to Leeds who don’t have a readymade replacement with any level of experience.

Leeds fans might have castigated Bailey Peacock-Farrell but we’d much rather have him warming our bench at the moment than trying to get in the Burnley squad – he hasn’t even made the bench yet in the Premier League.

Leeds have Kamil Miazek and Illan Meslier, who have shared the bench duties this season, but neither have any first-team experience, with Casilla playing in both EFL Cup games this season. That seemed odd at the time.

Miazek has been on the bench most recently but we think Meslier would be the one to step up if Casilla was out for a length of time. However, we could see a situation where Leeds have to look at the loan market if the FA issue isn’t cleared up before then.

Either way it’s a blot on the horizon for Leeds that looks likely to come back to bite us and provide another speed bump between the club and promotion.
