Keith Hackett: Luis Sinisterra challenge was careless for Brentford penalty v Leeds United

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the MOT Leeds News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest Leeds United games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…

Keith Hackett has insisted that the officials were right to hand Brentford a penalty as Leeds United crashed to a 5-2 defeat on Saturday afternoon.

The ex-FIFA referee admitted that Luis Sinisterra was “careless” in his lunge to try and win the ball from Ivan Toney, who dusted himself down and fired home.

The decision wasn’t given by the officials, but instead by VAR who straight away reviewed the footage, something they forgot to do later in the game.

“It comes under the banner of careless,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“It was a careless challenge and I can understand why a penalty has been given.”

Once again, there is no consistency in the Premier League.

We can see why this one may have been given, but what happened to the officials and the technology later in the game when an ever clearer decision went against us?

Crysencio Summerville left Aaron Hickey in his wake and was fouled on three separate occasions before finally being taken down and yet nothing was given whatsoever.

What makes it even worst is that VAR didn’t even review it, what rubbish is that?

If Sinisterra was careless, then Hickey was reckless, but yet again, because it was a player in a Leeds shirt, the decision wasn’t made and we get left in the dirt again.

It’s not good enough.
