Keith Hackett: Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips could be in line for Gareth Southgate reprimand

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the MOT Leeds News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest Leeds United games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…

Keith Hackett predicts Gareth Southgate to speak to Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips after a forceful challenge for England last week.

Phillips, 25, played the duration of England’s 4-0 World Cup qualifier win over Hungary in Budapest last Wednesday.

But an incident in the second half at the Puskas Arena caught the eye of ex-FIFA referee Hackett, despite ITV Football expressing their admiration on their Twitter account.

Hackett wasn’t impressed with the Leeds star flying into a challenge on his Hungarian opponent.

“This is one where if the referee is operating a duty of care, he could still award a free-kick for the foul challenge, which for me it was,” Hackett told MOT Leeds News.

“I think the manager [Southgate] can have a quiet word in his ear and just say ‘look, we like the strength, we like the power, but you can’t use the ball as an excuse when you’re challenging the player’.

“I think it comes into focus, in international football, you can tot up the yellow cards and not be available to the team.”

Phillips is certainly a player who is not afraid to get stuck in on the field.

He incurred the wrath of the referee on 10 occasions in the Premier League last season, picking up 10 yellow cards which brought about a ban.

However, he managed to avoid any reds, and he was only booked once in seven games for England at the recent European Championship.
