We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the MOT Leeds News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest Leeds United games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…
Keith Hackett has hailed Leeds United defender Liam Cooper for his words on VAR in the Premier League this week.
The Whites skipper admitted this week that the technology will never be perfect but would rather be with it than without.
Hackett showered praise on Cooper’s praise, despite himself and Leeds being on the end of some “very questionable” decisions over the past year.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Hackett said, “I think his statement was a positive contribution.
“In a massive to way to VAR, because I do think at times Leeds have been on the wrong end of VAR decisions that were very questionable, so I think he should be praised for taking that stance.
“He’s been at the sharp end of VAR, and he’s on solid foundations because he’s had decisions go against him and his team so I was quite pleased when I read that.”
Rather have it?
It is one of those things that everyone agrees with as long as it is going for their team at that moment in time.
What makes this a strange one is that VAR have never really benefitted Leeds that massively since the start of last season.
The Whites have been on the end of some shocking calls too, look at the Patrick Bamford “offside” against Crystal Palace last season.
Cooper himself picked up that red card at Manchester City, but despite that, he has still handed the PGMOL, Premier League and VAR a huge piece of support this week.
