Junior Firpo transfer: Leeds insider shares ‘Huge’ claim amid exit talk

Junior Firpo would not be a “huge” loss for Leeds United if he were to rejoin Real Betis, Paul Robinson has said.

With the Whites still not offering the defender a new contract, his camp are currently “laying the groundwork” for him to return to the La Liga side as speculation grows on his future at Elland Road [TEAMtalk].

Firpo’s contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024/25 campaign, but with fans not being able to peek behind the curtain, it has been speculated that a decision has already been made by Leeds.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “You can take a horse to water but you can’t make it drink. You can offer contracts and try getting agents to the table but if they don’t want to, there’s a different conversation to be had.

“Personally, I don’t think he would be a huge loss if he did go. He was defensively weak in the Premier League. If and when Leeds do get back to the Premier League, they’ll have to strength at left-back.

Leeds United better without Junior Firpo as contract saga continues?

“He wouldn’t be my first option so if he’s out of contract, and he is going to move on, it’ll work better for both parties and Leeds can purchase a better option in that area. He was woeful in the Premier League at times.”

Firpo has been an important part of Daniel Farke’s squad over the past two seasons, having notched one goal and three assists in 15 games this term after assisting seven more last term.

The manager had been without the Dominican Republic international since the start of December until returning as a substitute against Harrogate Town, with Sam Byram filling in at left-back.

Although the 31-year-old has looked solid in defence, there is no denying Firpo’s attacking abilities completely outshine his own, but his history in the Premier League does not make for good reading.
