Illan Meslier hits new heights at Leeds United after 'man of the match' display - Sky Sports pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Illan Meslier has “gone onto another level” at Leeds United since the World Cup break ended, according to Paul Robinson.

Meslier, 22, kept just his third clean sheet of the Premier League season in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle on New Year’s Eve, which was preceded by a top-class display against Manchester City.

Even though he conceded three times to Pep Guardiola’s side, Meslier made numerous top-drawer saves to deny Erling Haaland from having a field day at Elland Road on 28 December.

Meslier also did well against West Ham in the 2-2 draw on Wednesday (4 January) but Robinson was especially impressed by what he saw from the Frenchman in the two matches prior.

“He’s been brilliant for those two games (against Newcastle and Man City). If it wasn’t for him against Manchester City, they would’ve lost by six or seven,” Robinson told MOT Leeds News.

He’s been excellent and he’s getting better and better. His confidence is improving his decisions on coming out for crosses to win the ball, his distribution has hugely improved as well.

He’s the reason they picked up the point at St James’.

It was a decent defensive display but I think going forward, again, they look short. Defensively it was a lot better though and Meslier is a big part of that.

He was the man of the match, for me, against Manchester City and looks like the break has done him a world of good.

He’s gone onto another level since the World Cup break.”

Meslier has made 106 appearances for Leeds since his arrival from Lorient, initially on loan, in 2019.

He’s played 17 times in the Premier League this season, featuring in all of Leeds’ matches.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites have already made an approach to sign a player who could be the next arrival at Elland Road after Max Wober.
