'No-brainer signing' – Exclusive: Paul Robinson urges Leeds to sign £40k/wk ace after Sat news
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that Leeds should do “everything possible” to sign Dwight Gayle on loan, after the Newcastle striker was left out of their FA Cup squad over the weekend.
Gayle has only started one Premier League game this season and hasn’t scored a goal for Newcastle in this campaign – he’s reportedly on £40k-a-week at the Premier League side.
He was expected to lead the line against Rochdale on Saturday but was pulled from the squad on the eve of the game.
The official line was that he had a tight hamstring but Robinson believes it could be linked to a possible January move and that not being cup-tied could be a part of that.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “If Leeds could get Dwight Gayle… I’d do everything possible to get him.

“He’s not getting his game time at Newcastle, he wasn’t in the cup squad against Rochdale, whether that was through injury or because they didn’t want him to get cup-tied going forward.
“He might have a slight injury and wants to look after himself because of a potential move.
“If he became available, it’ll be an absolute no-brainer signing for Leeds and he’d score the goals we need.
“Whether the manager would want to replace Patrick Bamford as he plays him week-in-week-out… Gayle will not come to Leeds to sit on the bench, he’s doing that at Newcastle, he won’t be happy to do that.
“But if a player like him became available, I’d sign him, 100%.”
Leeds are in the market for a new striker after Eddie Nketiah was recalled from his loan early because of a lack of game time.
Ironically, Leeds travel to Arsenal tonight to meet the Premier League giants in the FA Cup, with Illan Meslier and Robbie Gotts set to get their senior debuts.
