‘Huge boost’ – Exclusive: Pundit thrilled as Leeds star delivers strong statement about future
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said it’s a “huge boost” for Leeds that Kalvin Phillips has said he wants to spend his whole career at the club.
Phillips made the bold statement in FourFourTwo magazine but Robinson thinks it will be put to the test if Leeds don’t get promoted this season.
Phillips said: “I want to spend my career at Leeds and see the club doing well in the Premier League. I’m just enjoying every minute right now.”
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “You don’t see a player staying at one club for his whole career very often, especially in this day and age, but it just seems to be a perfect fit for him and the club.
“It just seems to work, and he has a brilliant relationship with the fans at the moment.
“If Leeds are in the Premier League why wouldn’t he want to stay? I think that’s the only thing with his drive and ambition, at club and international level, if he wants to be in the Premier League.
“I think there will be a different conversation with the club if Leeds don’t get in the Premier League and I think there will be many clubs after him – he’s a had a great season. I don’t think he’s been far off an international call-up.
“I think he will have the opportunity to move so I think his statement will be put to the test if Leeds don’t go up. Leeds would be doing very well to hold onto him.
“However, he can fulfil his ambition with Leeds, as they’re on the brink of the Premier League and to say he wants to stay is a huge boost for the club and it would be great if he does.”
The rise of Phillips under Marcelo Bielsa has been extraordinary. Bielsa has moulded him into one of the best defensive mids in the country and Phillips is knocking on the door of Gareth Southgate’s international side.
We wouldn’t be surprised to see him become the first Leeds player to win a cap since Alan Smith way back in 2004.
