Hackett calls for Bielsa to speak out about VAR after Leeds v Tottenham flashpoint

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett to the MOT Leeds News team. Each week, Hackett will discuss the big moments from the latest Leeds United games and deliver his verdict on whether his successors got their calls right or wrong…

Keith Hackett has said that Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa should make his voice heard over offside decisions that are ruining the game.

Leeds came out on the right side of the VAR decision on Saturday in the 3-1 win over Tottenham, after Harry Kane’s goal was judged to be (just offside).

However, Hackett said it doesn’t matter which way the decisions go and that Bielsa should call for a change in the laws.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News about the latest VAR incident Hackett said, “As fans, why are we allowing this to happen?

“Why, as fans, are we allowing the types of decisions that are damaging to the game?

“We want goals. It doesn’t matter whether it’s for you or against you, that’s not the point.

“The point is, this week it was Tottenham, next week it will be Leeds. And Leeds have already been hit with some similar decisions.

“Someone like Bielsa, who has a voice, he’s well respected, why is he not voicing it to the authorities and to the LMA? The LMA need to do a survey and get their opinions and that’s not difficult to do.”

We’re with Hackett on this, although we were glad Harry Kane’s goal didn’t stand on Saturday.

A system whereby there has to be clear space between the lines of the defender and the attacker could work.

Bringing it down to a millimeter here or a millimeter there isn’t in keeping with the spirit of the game and it’s not improving it for players or for fans.
