Independent regulator throws new development into 49ers takeover of Leeds United - Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that the upcoming independent regulator will throw something else into the mix for the 49ers Enterprises ahead of their Leeds United takeover.

The finance expert admitted it should not deter the American investment though, as it has been lined up for a number of years now at Elland Road.

Gary Neville has previously insisted that American ownership is a danger to English clubs, with the independent regulator set to make things more difficult.

“As things stand at the minute, we don’t think it’s going to deter their investment,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“There is nothing along those lines and it has been lined up for a number of years, so the investment proposition at Leeds United is still there but it does throw something else into the mix.

“What we are now waiting on is if this is going to come to pass and we are going to have independent regulation, how much power is it going to have based on some of those suggestions and who is controlling it and the knock-on effects for the clubs.

“I think we’ll still see a little bit of fighting in and around the Premier League against the Football League and the government, I don’t think the clubs will roll over and accept all of this, but it will have an impact on what owners can do with their clubs moving forward.

“To caveat that with Leeds United, the 49ers would still be in a strong position with Leeds but obviously that position is much stronger with them in the Premier League so it comes down to performance as much as it does with the independent regulator.”

In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
