Huge package on the line as Leeds United make Sam Allardyce decision – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Dan Plumley has insisted that Leeds United rolling the dice to appoint Sam Allardyce shows the financial pressure of staying in the Premier League.

The finance expert admitted that relegation can lead to a minimum of £60million off the revenue line, with a “huge” package likely built around survival in place.

The Times has reported that Allardyce will pocket £2.5million if the Whites stay in the top flight, on top of his standard £500,000 wage for four games.

“It certainly shows the pressure and the financial pressure in place and staying in the Premier League,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“We know that being relegated means £60million is off the revenue line in year one and that’s a minimum so when there is a manager change in place and that huge package around survival and staying up there then that’s what this relates to.

“It is a significant amount of money to be without so it certainly shows the pressure the club is under at the minute.”

£2.5million is a lot of money and the potential of paying out £3million in total for four games seems outrageous, but that is nothing compared to what you can earn at this top level.

Premier League revenue is easily over £100million each season, so the fact that Leeds are on the verge of throwing it all away after finishing ninth two seasons ago shows how badly they have been managed.

The impossible has been done before, and it feels like that right now at Elland Road.

In other Leeds United news, the club may now face a losing battle to keep their star player at Elland Road beyond the summer transfer window.
