We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson thinks that Leeds need to sign a new goalkeeper after the injury to Kiko Casilla exposed a weakness in their squad.
19-year-old keeper Elia Caprile made the bench for the game against Sheffield United on Sunday with Casilla out.
Robinson thinks that Leeds need an older, more experienced keeper who can play a role similar to Scott Carson at Man City.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “I’ve said from day one they still need another goalkeeper.
“I think they need an experienced older head, someone who can be a calming influence on the team if needed.
“Kiko’s performances over the past two years have been up and down.
“Meslier is a young keeper and we’re yet to see how he’s going to cope over a season in the top flight.
“I think it’s an area that needs reinforcement and I think we will see Leeds sign someone.
“You see lots of Premier League clubs carrying a third experienced English goalkeeper… Scott Carson at Man City, Joe Hart at Tottenham.
“I’d like to see Leeds get someone similar and sign a steady, experienced goalkeeper.
“Meslier is the man in possession of the gloves and he’s been unfortunate to let seven goals in but I’d like to see a new number two/three come in before the transfer window shuts.”
With Casilla out, Leeds are one injury or suspension away from a crisis at the back, with Caprile not having played a minute for the Leeds first-team yet.
Leeds have been linked with a move for Angus Gunn but the former Man City keeper doesn’t fit Robinson’s brief of an experienced, older keeper.
However, on a loan, the Southampton stopper would provide solid cover for Meslier.
