Exclusive: Paul Robinson – It’s a bad time for talented Leeds 21y/o to pick up long-term injury
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that it’s a really bad time for 21-year-old keeper Will Huffer to pick up a long-term injury that could scupper a summer move.
He added that Huffer has “real talent” and that he’s surprised that he’s not been given another deal at Leeds, although he thinks that may still happen.
Huffer is out of contract in the summer and has dropped down the pecking order at Elland Road with Kiko Casilla, Illan Meslier and 18-year-old Elia Caprile all ahead of him.
Huffer is currently suffering from a long-term wrist injury and it’s led to speculation that he could have played his last game for the club.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “Huffer hasn’t had much of a chance at first-team level and it’s obviously a really bad time for him to get a wrist injury.
“I think he’s a really good young goalkeeper, I’ve seen a lot of him. There’s some real talent there.
“The break in the season is going to give him a chance to rest up and get fit again but I’m surprised they haven’t given him a new deal.
“The problem for him is that the wrist injury could hamper a move if that’s what he wants. I actually think he may get offered another deal at Elland Road.”
The goalkeeper situation at Leeds is intriguing. Casilla is banned for another six games and it will be interesting to see if he has a long-term future at Leeds.
If he doesn’t then Illan Meslier would likely be the new number one. If that happens then Elia Caprile would be the understudy and Huffer could play for the Under-23s.
However, he might not be happy at being usurped by an 18-year-old and could want to find a new club in the summer, injury permitting.
