Exclusive: Paul Robinson claims Leeds ace could seek club exit in Jan after weekend development

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson believes that Eddie Nketiah could want to leave Leeds and head back to Arsenal after the north London club hired Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

While Arteta wasn’t in charge of Arsenal for the 0-0 draw against Everton on Saturday, he was thought to have had a big say on the line-up, which included a number of youngsters like Emile Smith-Rowe.

Robinson thinks that could convince Nketiah that he could feature for the Gunners in the second-half of the season.

Nketiah is on loan from Arsenal until the end of the season but has suffered from a lack of game-time under Marcelo Bielsa. He did play 45 minutes in the 2-1 defeat to Fulham on Saturday and created the goal for Patrick Bamford.

Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “I really question whether Nketiah will stay or not due to the lack of game time that he’s had.

“I think the player himself will want to play and with a new manager coming into Arsenal he might not have to go out on loan again.

“If he’s not going to get any game time at Leeds or it’s going to be the same time it has been so far, I think he would probably rather go and spend some time with Arteta at Arsenal.

“If you believe what you read, he [Arteta] had a big input into the team yesterday [v Everton] and it was full of youngsters. Nketiah might think he’s got a chance there now. He may well want to go back.”

Leeds lost Pablo Hernandez for a month with a hamstring injury in the defeat to Fulham, and with Jack Clarke and potentially Nketiah leaving in January, it could be a busier window than the club was initially expecting.

If Nketiah goes, the very least we’d expect is a new striker to come in, but Marcelo Bielsa might think he needs a Hernandez replacement now too.

Tyler Roberts is back fit but won’t start against Preston on Boxing Day. Bielsa has said that Gjanni Alioski will start in place of Hernandez.
