We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that he wouldn’t play Kalvin Phillips against Arsenal after the midfielder said he would be taking an injection to get him through the game.
The former Leeds star said he was “speaking from experience” when he warned about taking injection to play through pain and added, “those days have gone”.
Phillips admitted that he would be taking an injection during a Twitch stream last week.
He’s missed the last three games with a shoulder injury. In Friday’s press conference Marcelo Bielsa said that the player was in contention for the game.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “I wouldn’t play Phillips if he isn’t 100% fit.
“You look at the game. If it was a game they’d earmarked to win or a really key game in the season… but I’d rather Phillips missed the Arsenal game and was fit for the rest of the season than playing with an injection and then being ruled out for a longer period.
“Yes, he’s absolutely vital for Leeds and how they play. You can see that from the last two 4-1s.
“But, speaking from experience about playing after an injection for pain, it’s to the detriment of maybe being out for a longer period the other side.
“I’d much rather he was 100% for the next game against Everton and miss the game against Arsenal.
“The medical staff will be well clued in, though, but the days of playing through pain with an injection are gone.
“For Arsenal, which is a tough game anyway, I’d much rather he missed out and we have a 100% fit Phillips for next week.”
Rob Price – head of medicine and development at Leeds – has got a good reputation and we can’t see him doing anything that would jeopardise Phillips’ health.
It would be a huge blow if the midfielder missed out, though. Arsenal are without Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny and it’s the perfect opportunity for Phillips to boss the middle of the park at Elland Road on Sunday.
