Daniel Farke to make Illan Meslier decision as Leeds United announce new signing

Illan Meslier will still be Daniel Farke’s first-choice goalkeeper at Leeds United despite the signing of Alex Cairns, Paul Robinson has said.

The club announced [8 July] that the 31-year-old has rejoined Leeds from Salford City, having left the club in 2015 after coming through the academy ranks at Thorp Arch.

Cairns made 51 appearances for the Ammies last season, though Robinson believes the shot-stopper will need to adjust to a backup role next term.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, he said: “He’s been signed to bolster the goalkeeper ranks. I think Meslier will be the No.1 next season, being a player that the club are keen to keep hold of.

“In Alex Cairns, you’re getting a player who came through the club’s academy, 31 years of age, very experienced, who will be relied upon as a backup to Meslier. He’s played over 300 career games.

“He played every game last season so it’s going to be a different role for him – he won’t be coming in as the No.1. With Kristoffer Klaesson leaving after three years at Elland Road, this is just a one in, one out situation, but they’re replacing with a better goalkeeper.”

Alex Cairns rejoins Leeds United ranks as goalkeeper options boosted

The goalkeeping department has rarely been an issue at Elland Road, even when Meslier was sent off during the 2023/24 campaign and Darlow filled in.

Darlow was also sidelined for a few matches with a thumb injury, but Meslier was able to remain in between the sticks with Klaesson unneeded on the bench.

Although he is unlikely to start many matches next season, Cairns’ added experience will be greatly appreciated as Leeds aim to secure promotion to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

He might even be utilised in some cup games if Farke looks to give Meslier a rest, though the Frenchman has himself been linked with an exit [L’Equipe, 11 July].
