Dan Plumley reacts to Forbes reveal on Leeds United operating income

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United...

Daniel Plumley has insisted that Forbes work out operating income based on numerous findings as Leeds United were said to bring in more than the likes of Chelsea.

The American outlet shared that the Whites brought in $51million [£44.5million], but that is based on big transfers made as well as earnings before interest, taxes and amortisation.

Plumley admitted the figures were looking very good for Leeds, with the optics even better as the American audience will grow for the Whites as a result of being on the Forbes top 20 list.

“What Forbes do is operating income is earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation,” he exclusively told MOT Leeds News.

“You look at that for Leeds in context with the bigger clubs, the slight challenge with that, you have to look at what transfers happened at other clubs as if they spent big in the market or they’ve sold a lot of players, that will change the figures. Leeds’ figures were boosted by turning a profit so, that’s the context, it’s not saying Leeds are millions better off than Chelsea, the dynamics are just different.

“It’s a very positive figure for Leeds and if you look at that, it fits where they’ve been at – establish themselves in the Premier League but not break the bank, but they are establishing so that means the finances are looking good.

“Go back to the wider optics and the 49ers, this is an American report and everybody knows about Forbes but not everyone will know about Leeds United yet, but they read that report and they will do know.”

The American audience is growing with each week at Elland Road.

Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams and Jesse Marsch, alongside the 49ers have helped with a huge increase in viewing figures and representation across the Atlantic.

Now with Forbes sharing this huge financial information, surely that is only going to keep growing.
