Brenden Aaronson ‘surprise’ revealed at Elland Road amid Leeds United update

Paul Robinson is surprised by Daniel Farke’s decision to bring Brenden Aaronson back into the Leeds United set-up ahead of next season.

According to Graham Smyth [10 June], Farke and other club officials held talks with the 23-year-old, which ended with the midfielder staying put at Elland Road ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Aaronson spent last season out on loan with Union Berlin, making 38 appearances in all competitions as the German side avoided relegation from the Bundesliga on the final day of the campaign.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “I’m surprised by it, but it may be a case of having to bring him back into the squad. I don’t think he was good enough in the Premier League – he was lightweight, got knocked off the ball too much, and lost possession too much.

“At times, he was running around too much. His enthusiasm and energy needed to be curbed in a system. The Premier League didn’t suit him as it was too quick for him. In the Championship, he could be integrated into the squad.

“He’s got good quality and he’s had a good loan spell, so the manager has clearly seen something. If Leeds had gone up, I don’t think he would have been brought back. But in a Championship squad, he gives you legs, and running power, matching how the manager wants to close down from the front.

“If you can harness him into a role, and get a bit more quality, there’s an opportunity that the manager has seen something.”

Leeds United to utilise Brenden Aaronson next season

Having become a favourable figure in Germany during his loan spell, and even grabbing an assist in Union Berlin’s all-important final game of the season, many expected Aaronson to leave the club this summer.

Brenden Aaronson managed just one goal from 36 Premier League appearances in his first season at Leeds United.

Especially after Leeds missed out on promotion to the Premier League, few thought the American would return to the squad and help them fight their way out of the division.

However, with many players linked with an Elland Road exit this summer, it could be seen as a smart decision by Farke to make sure he has enough squad depth in different areas of the pitch.
