We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that Rodrigo De Paul could be the man to replace Pablo Hernandez at Leeds and that the chase for the Argentina international is proof that Leeds are back in the “big time”.
The latest report claims that De Paul is currently “stalling” on a Leeds move in the hope that Juventus come in for him. [Mirror]
Robinson described him as a “clever player” who can play across all the different midfield positions.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “It’s a role that they’re going to have to look at. You saw how important Hernandez was to Leeds in the run-in to the Championship title.
“He was wrapped in cotton wool, he was subbed on in games and then subbed off. He came on, did his job and then the thinking was to take him off and get him ready for the next game.
“He’s obviously not going to be able to go on forever. Hernandez has still got time at Leeds left in him, but the way he plays and what Bielsa wants from that position, it’s important to bring someone else into the club.
“Rodrigo De Paul can play across all of the midfield positions but he’s capable of unlocking doors like Hernandez. He’s a clever player, he can see a pass going forward and it just shows you the level the club are at that they’re going for players like this.
“They’re not afraid to be paying £20m-£30m for these sorts of players. It shows that Leeds are back in the big time and I have no doubt that footballers like De Paul will come to Leeds because of Bielsa.”
The same Mirror report claims that De Paul hasn’t ruled out a move to Leeds and if Juventus don’t come in for him, he could complete a big move to Elland Road.
Leeds have already smashed their transfer record this summer after signing Valencia striker Rodrigo for a fee of £27m.
A deal for De Paul would likely see that broken for the second time in this window.
