Time running out for Leeds United to sell Valencia-linked Helder Costa
It feels as though Leeds United may have concluded their business for the summer transfer window with major updates very few and far between right now.
Sure, Victor Orta may still add a player to the Under-23s or the academy with Celtic’s Leo Hjelde strongly linked with a move to Elland Road. But in terms of new first-team players, it’s looking increasingly likely that Marcelo Bielsa’s squad is set in stone until at least January.
However, one player’s future remains unclear as selling Helder Costa in the final days of the transfer window could spark some life into the currently-frozen revolving door at Elland Road.
Costa, 27, has fallen out of favour for Bielsa in the last year. Raphinha’s form has obviously played a massive role in that but the former Wolves winger’s displays have been part of it too.
To put it simply, the £16million addition from last summer simply hasn’t been good enough in the Premier League and was hardly good enough in the Championship.
Even against League One side Crewe on Tuesday, Costa struggled to impress as he made his first start of the season and played all 90 minutes of the 3-0 win at Elland Road.
Stats by WhoScored show Costa failed to complete a single key pass, had two shots at goal that were both off target, didn’t complete any dribbles and was also dispossessed once.
If a Premier League player can’t play well against a struggling League One team, who can he play well against in the top-flight?
Fortunately, Costa has been linked with a move away this summer.
Last month, The Athletic journalist Phil Hay reported that the one-time Portugal international might be on the chopping block at Leeds if Bielsa is able to land another new winger.
Valencia have shown an interest in the ex-Benfica attacker, who has played in La Liga before when he spent half of the 2014/15 season on loan at Deportivo.
Leeds dropped a clanger by spending as much as they did to sign Costa from Wolves, who no doubt were sniggering away in the background when Orta agreed that £16million permanent deal in his loan.
But we could at least try and recoup some of that money to help put towards a new winger before the transfer window shuts.
Paul Robinson has told MOT Leeds News that he’d be surprised if Costa stayed at Elland Road past this summer and predicted that he could go for somewhere in between £8million to £10million.
We’d take that.
In other Leeds United news, Bielsa can save Andrea Radrizzani millions of pounds after what happened on Tuesday.
