MOT View: Update on unhappy PL player reportedly wanted by Leeds could force Orta rethink
Victor Orta may be forced into reconsidering who Leeds United will eye up to replace Eddie Nketiah this month after a move for Che Adams was ruled out.
The Daily Mail has reported that Leeds are interested in signing Adams, 23, on loan from Southampton after Arsenal took the decision to terminate Nketiah’s loan spell at Elland Road due to his lack of game-time in the Championship.
Football Insider reported Leeds’ interest in Adams in December but now it seems as though director of football Orta will have to find a new target after Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl ruled out the possibility of a loan for the ex-Birmingham striker.
“I cannot consider that I loan him out because I need every player, especially in the attacking position, we don’t have that many,” said Hasenhuttl, as quoted by LeedsLive on Friday.
“I know he is not so happy at the moment because he didn’t play so often and did not score, but we know what we have with him and we know we need him in the second half of the season.”
Southampton must be pretty desperate to keep hold of Adams even though Hasenhuttl admits that the reported Leeds target is unhappy with his situation at St Mary’s.
The Saints paid £15million to sign the forward from Birmingham in the summer but he is yet to score a goal for the south coast club in 17 appearances across all competitions.
Adams’ goalscoring record is quite the contrast to his form last season in the Championship when he hit the back of the net 22 times in 46 appearances.
Leeds will no doubt have eyed up Adams due to his exploits in 2018/19 but based on Hasenhuttl’s quotes, they might as well give up hope of signing the former Sheffield United striker.
Orta needs to find a new forward for Marcelo Bielsa this month if he wants to ensure that the Whites are able to secure promotion to the Premier League.
Patrick Bamford is the only recognised centre-forward in the senior squad while Tyler Roberts can also play there.
However since his move from West Brom in January 2018, the Wales international has had numerous injury issues and someone else needs to be brought in as soon as possible to bolster Bielsa’s attack.
In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay has said whether Brighton can recall Ben White.
