MOT View: Sold too soon? Player value skyrockets, reportedly worth 10x what Leeds sold him for

Caleb Ekuban was quite the flop during his time at Elland Road – but did Leeds United sell the Ghanaian forward too soon?

According to Turkish news outlet Fotospor, Trabzonspor value Ekuban, 25, at £9million as leading clubs in Europe start to take note of the former Leeds striker.

It is hard to imagine that this is the same player that Leeds reportedly sold for just £900,000 last summer [Sabah] after he failed to make an impact at Elland Road.

Ekuban endured an injury-plagued debut season at Leeds when he was signed by Victor Orta from Chievo in 2017.

He managed to score just one goal in his 20 Championship appearances and upon Marcelo Bielsa’s arrival a year later, he was sent out on loan to Trabzonspor.

After impressing in Turkey by scoring eight goals in 36 appearances and helping his side qualify for the Europa League, Trabzonspor took up their option to sign Ekuban permanently for less than £1million.

Since then, Ekuban has continued to improve.

The four-times Ghana international has scored eight goals and supplied six assists in 25 appearances across all competitions, even though he has had similar injury issues to what he had in his spell at Leeds.

Ekuban is averaging better than one direct goal contribution in every other game and it is no surprise to see clubs reportedly eyeing up the Trabzonspor ace.

But did Leeds sell him too soon based on his new reported valuation of £9million?

In a nutshell, no.

Ekuban wasn’t fancied by Bielsa and there is no way that he would have been able to hit his current form if he stayed in England.

He wouldn’t have had the opportunities he’s had in Turkey and that £9million valuation by Trabzonspor still seems way too high for such an injury-prone striker.

The 25-year-old may be worth 10 times more than what Leeds sold him for based on the reports in Turkey but it was still best to sell him when they did.

In other Leeds United news, Manchester City want the Whites to sign this £13.6million Brazilian on loan from them in the summer.
