Leeds United Under-23 attacker Joe Gelhardt has been nominated for the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for March.
The Leeds Under-23s are on the brink of winning promotion up to Division 1 but Gelhardt is already mixing with the big boys.
Three of the six players shortlisted for the award in March come from the two top teams in Division 1, Man City and Blackburn.
Only Aaron Ramsey from Villa was nominated alongside Gelhardt from Division 2.
It comes after Gelhardt scored four goals in three games, winning two penalties and providing an assist.
We’re not sure what else he needs to do to get his chance in the first-team.
Marcelo Bielsa obviously thinks he’s good enough. He’s named him on the first-team bench six times without bringing him on for his debut.
And with Leeds sitting on 42 points and guaranteed top-flight status for another year, we think Gelhardt has to be given the opportunity to prove himself ahead of a busy summer transfer window.
Leeds have no real back-up for Bamford. Tyler Roberts hasn’t scored this season and Rodrigo is being played in the number 10 position.
Rodrigo came on for Bamford on Saturday against Sheffield United but we expect him to start games at number 10.
It means that Leeds either need to rely on Gelhardt or sign a new striker in the summer.
Given that, surely it’s now time to give Gelhardt his debut? Perhaps not in the next few games, against Man City, Man United or Liverpool.
But games against Brighton, Burnley, West Brom and Southampton seem tailor-made for Gelhardt to show us all what he can do.
