The Athletic recently published the results of an extensive fan survey and there was one very surprising result from Leeds United fans.
While they were very happy with Bielsa being in charge next year (98.13%) and very happy with how the club is being run (97.92%), one of the key results was at odds with the others.
Headed, “Happiness with club’s performance this season”, Leeds scored just 54.83/100 and finished 13th in the table.
Given that Leeds are almost guaranteed to be playing Premier League football next season with eight games to play it seems baffling.
Athletic journalist Phil Hay said the result was “very, very surprising” and stated that it could only be because of the amount of goals that Leeds have conceded, the inability to deal with set-pieces, or something else that is quite a small point in the grand scheme of things.
Talking on the Phil Hay Show podcast, Hay said, “When people were asked if they were happy with the Leeds performance this year it came in at 54.83% which is pretty low for a promoted club who have played the way they’ve played and are mid-table and are definitely staying up.
“I can only assume that in the main, 100% of people are happy or satisfied, but the reason it’s dropped to 50% must be because people have issues with the amount of goals conceded, the problems at set-pieces, or other little things that are niggling at them and turning them into perfectionists.
“I’m very, very surprised it’s not in the 80%s or 90%s, I find it difficult to imagine they can pick much wrong with this squad. I think Bielsa has got everything he can from these players.
“I know we could pick at set-pieces but this is a side that’s come out of the Championship and performed really well.”
Ambition is good but…
Can Leeds fans really have found much to criticise this season?
The fan survey claims that almost one in two are not happy with the way the club’s performed in the Premier League.
Perhaps they were so sick of clicking “very happy” and felt they had to find fault somewhere.
Leeds have conceded a lot of goals – 48, which is one more than they’ve scored. Only four teams have conceded more in the Premier League.
But, we’ve had huge injury problems art centre-back. Now they’ve been sorted with Diego Llorente back, we’ve only conceded five in the last six.
There are obviously improvements to make but in terms of hitting goals, promotion followed by a mid-table finish is pretty good by anyone’s standards.
Except, it seems, almost 50% of Leeds fans.
