Leeds United ‘to make amends’ after Daniel Farke ‘gamble’ backfires

Leeds United and their strikers have made plenty of headlines this season.

Whether it be about their form in front of goal or players such as Patrick Bamford looking towards an Elland Road exit, it’s been a topic of consistent discussion this term.

In fact, Joe Gelhardt’s loan to Hull is now imminent and, due to this, the future of Bamford seems to be with the Whites.

Many fans thought the West Yorkshire outfit needed a new number nine in the summer but, while some names have been linked in January, nothing concrete has surfaced just yet.

Mateo Joseph was the man chosen to lead Farke’s line against Harrogate in their FA Cup win on Saturday and while they left LS11 victorious, BBC Leeds journalist Jonny Buchan believed it was evident that Farke’s gamble of keeping the Spaniard as a prominent member of his squad hasn’t paid off.

“It was a big gamble to have him [Joseph] as your number one, maybe now number two striker,” he said on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet Podcast (13 January).

“He isn’t proven at this level, he hasn’t done it at this level and he’s now had half a season, okay he hasn’t been playing week-in and week-out but he still hasn’t really convinced us that he can do it at this level.

“He was up against a League Two defence at the weekend, a very good and very organised defence but he still couldn’t get it in the back of the net.”

Daniel Farke needs to make amends and sign a striker for Leeds United

Although Farke has said it’s unlikely that any business will be taking place in terms of arrivals at Elland Road this season, if an opportunity presents itself, the Whites should strike in an instant.

The addition of a new number nine would allow Farke to try and make amends for his shortcomings in the summer transfer window, and, with players such as Mergim Berisha being linked with a switch, it feels like too good of an opportunity for Leeds to miss out on.

At the moment, nothing concrete has yet surfaced but if Leeds could welcome a new talisman to their squad, it could more or less guarantee them promotion. If they don’t them it might cost them promotion.

Of course, Bamford, Piroe and Joseph are decent enough but if the German could source a player that could bag 10/15 goals in the second half of the campaign, it could be the best bit of business he could possibly do.

Only time will tell what the future holds but at the moment, it feels like things could go that way.

In other Leeds news, Daniel Farke has been questioned for a “weird” decision he made about Josuha Guilavogui.
