Leeds United set to repeat costly transfer error amid Charlie Cresswell exit latest

Leeds United could live to regret selling Charlie Cresswell in the same way they did after allowing Leif Davis to leave.

Cresswell is reportedly heading for an Elland Road exit this summer, having barely featured under Daniel Farke in the 2023/24 campaign [Alan Nixon, 9 June].

Davis was allowed to move on in similar circumstances after failing to break into the first team and has just returned to the top flight with Ipswich Town after helping them to a second-placed finish in the Championship.

Should Leeds United keep Charlie Cresswell?

The tale of Davis should be a cautionary one for those at Leeds who seem keen to move Cresswell on this summer.

Having failed to break into the Whites’ first team by the summer of 2021, Davis was sent on loan to Bournemouth – then of the Championship – but struggled to make an impact there either, managing just 837 minutes of football across all competitions.

The left-back then joined Ipswich on a permanent deal and helped his new side to an automatic Premier League promotion spot, finishing a place above his old side and racking up a league-leading 18 Championship assists in the process.

Cresswell, 21, enjoyed a strong loan spell in the Championship with Millwall in 2022/23 and returned to Leeds last summer hoping to make a case for more regular inclusion at Elland Road. However, he was afforded just 133 Championship minutes across five outings and essentially wasted a year of his development.

If Leeds sell the defender and he goes on to be successful elsewhere, the Whites will be kicking themselves at making the same mistake twice.
