Leeds United could cost themselves promotion over Junior Firpo transfer decision

Junior Firpo has been mooted for a January exit from Elland Road but Leeds United cannot afford to sanction his departure if they want to achieve promotion.

Leeds are said to be interested in a deal to sign Daniel Svensson from Nordsjaelland (Fotboll Direkt) if Firpo is to leave the club in January.

Firpo has been a crucial component of the Whites’ success this season, but the Yorkshire club are yet to offer him a new deal and could offload him in January in an attempt to recuperate some additional finances [Football League Paper].

While his exit may make some sense from the financial perspective, his importance to the side needs to be considered before any decision is made.

Junior Firpo could be integral to Leeds United promotion

While it has been several other players to earn the spotlight this season, Firpo has been in excellent form for a large part of the campaign and without him, Leeds simply wouldn’t be where they are.

His ability both offensively and defensively has been key in many encounters and his four-goal contributions are a showcase of that.

Could Leeds upgrade on him? Possibly. But it would be a huge risk in January and it isn’t one that is worth taking when promotion remains on the cards.

Firpo knows the club, the league and most importantly, he knows the way of playing at Elland Road and that experience is often paramount to success in the Championship and for the minimal fee they’d be likely to receive for him, is it really worth the gamble?

The financial benefits of promotion massively outweigh those of any sale and that has to be under consideration in the coming weeks.
