Daniel Farke comments spark Leeds United promotion fear

Daniel Farke has suggested Leeds United will refrain from doing too much business in January for fear of damaging the spirit of the squad and it’s a concerning comment to make.

The Whites are enjoying a successful campaign at large, occupying the summit of the Championship but several deficiencies have shone through with results like their recent 1-1 draw against Blackburn.

Joel Piroe hasn’t had a bad season by any means but many times his lack of instincts as a natural striker has proven costly while Illan Meslier has had his fair share of criticism for his role at the other end of the pitch.

Realistically, both areas are ones that need improving on in January but, as it stands, Joe Gelhardt’s departure is the only expected business at Elland Road and Farke’s recent comments seem to back that up.

When quizzed on the transfer business at the club, Farke said: “Sometimes, when you do too much business, it can also disturb the spirit and the vibe in and around the group.”

If Leeds opt against January business, it could prove costly in their bid to achieve promotion.

Leeds United cannot afford to stand still in the January window

While the Whites have a three-point advantage at the top of the table, that can change in the blink of an eye and with promotion rivals undoubtedly looking to strengthen, Leeds would be foolish to not follow suit.

Ultimately, the signing of a striker and a goalkeeper is needed if they are to maintain their push and Illan Meslier’s pending departure from Elland Road could force their hand when it comes to the latter.

If Leeds can add to their squad with the signing of a natural finisher, their chances of promotion are boosted significantly and Farke and the club need to be aware of that if they aren’t already.

Although football doesn’t work in hindsight, Leeds could be made to rue their decision to ignore the transfer opportunities this month if they do fail in their attempts to achieve automatic promotion.
