Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has already held talks with Leeds United DoF Victor Orta

Todd Boehly has already held talks with Victor Orta about taking the Leeds director of football to Stamford Bridge for Chelsea, says Simon Phillips.

The Blues had been set to hire RB Salzburg man Christoph Freud as their new sporting director, but he backed out of the deal at the last minute to stay in Austria and that has led to Chelsea re-opening their search.

According to The Telegraph [20 September] Leeds director of football Orta was part of their shortlist, but former The Sun journalist Phillips wrote on his Substack [21 September] that talks have in fact already been held.

“Chelsea also want to be bigger in America, hence the summer tour and perhaps why Christian Pulisic was not granted a move this summer. Todd Boehly knows families, agents, and reps for many of these players,” he wrote.

“Before Boehly was even officially in place at Chelsea, he was looking at Brendan Aaronson, who of course joined Leeds around the same time as Boehly took the Chelsea reins.

“But Boehly had already spoken to Christoph Freund around that time and Aaronson, who had been spotted and signed by Freund at RB Salzburg, was mentioned. This all occurred back in April time.

“Chelsea now being linked with Victor Orta is likely to be connected to this as well, with Boehly already having conversations with Orta, who advised Leeds to sign Aaronson.”

Pressure

There is big pressure now on Leeds to keep hold of Orta, or potentially lose him and all his knowledge and contacts to a Premier League rival in Chelsea.

Right now the club have a big advantage in the market that they’re able to identify top talents early on and bring them in for a fraction of the price they’re able to sell them for in the future.

But if Orta goes to Chelsea they won’t be able to compete with them in that market because financially they’re on two different levels.

Orta has got his fans and his foes at Leeds, but if the club were to lose him it would be a huge blow and they would severely struggle to replace him ahead of the January window and potentially even the summer where the World Cup could affect targets.

It’s certainly one to keep an eye on as the next weeks progress, because Chelsea have been very aggressive in their approaches for what they want this summer and clearly they want Orta.
