Chelsea could move for Leeds United director of football Victor Orta - Matt Law

Chelsea are interested in taking Leeds United’s director of football Victor Orta to Stamford Bridge as their new sporting director, according to Matt Law.

Chelsea have been in the hunt for someone to take on the role since Todd Boehly bought the club in the summer, after he awarded himself the position on an interim basis ahead of the transfer window.

But after the Blues saw a move for RB Salzburg man Christoph Freund collapse on Tuesday [20 September], The Telegraph are reporting that Orta is among the candidates with the position now up for grabs once again.

Orta dealt directly with Chelsea as they tried to sign Raphinha from Leeds earlier in the summer, although the Brazilian eventually went to Barcelona instead.

The report states that it is “unclear whether or not Chelsea will attempt to speak to Orta, but the fact the 43-year-old’s name has been discussed is intriguing in itself.”

Leeds fans have an up and down relationship with Orta because he has done a great job since coming in, but he’s also failed to get key deals over the line in the past too.

But if Orta was to leave the club, it would be a huge blow to Leeds United as they have finally got a structure in place at the football club that runs things properly and act in the best interests of the club.

Orta has developed a reputation as an excellent negotiator, bringing in several first-team players this summer for excellent prices while also breaking the club’s sale record twice with deals for Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.

It’s no surprise that Chelsea are interested because Orta is one of the best in the Premier League when it comes to doing what he does, and he will know the markets that Chelsea are looking to operate in well.

There’s no doubting that it would be a step up for him to be able to work with the funds he’d have available there, but Leeds is a club with a real family feel and he has been made to feel welcome ever since joining back in 2017.

Hopefully Andrea Radrizzani can convince him to stay put and ignore the noise from London, but it’s hard not to fear the worst.

In other Leeds news, one star man admitted he “had a go” at a youth player on his recent trip to the Under-21’s.
