‘It is happening’ – Phil Hay makes big claim about major Leeds off-the-pitch deal
Athletic journalist Phil Hay has claimed that the new Leeds United kit deal with Adidas “is in the bag”.
Speculation has been rife about the new kit deal for a while now with the current Kappa deal running out in the summer.
In a conversation on his personal Twitter account on Sunday, Hay said he didn’t know “when that will be announced but it is happening”.
After a fan said you could tell it was happening because all the current Kappa stuff was reduced Hay said, “They always do fire sales of kit towards the end of a season but yes, in this instance Adidas deal is in the bag.”
This is a major deal for Leeds and the really good news here is that it doesn’t seem contingent on the club winning promotion, although any deal is likely to be much more lucrative in the top flight.
It’s a huge endorsement of Leeds and the deal will open more markets for the club.
It was reported that Leeds have sold 110,000 shirts this season which puts them in the top six in the country. The Adidas deal will likely push Leeds even further up into the upper echelons of the Premier League.
MOT Leeds News columnist Paul Robinson has hailed the deal as “brilliant” and added that he sees the deal as showing that Leeds are now seen as a Premier League club.
“It shows how the club is thought of in the football world. Leeds are seen as a Premier League club and it now has to do the job of a Premier League side.”
On that subject, Leeds got their promotion charge back on track on Saturday with a deserved win against Bristol City.
Leeds were the only side in the top seven to win over the weekend and they’ve now rebuilt a buffer of three points back to third.
