Luca Thomas puts Leeds United on red alert after what he did on York City debut

Leeds United academy starlet Luca Thomas has shown he’s ready for the step up to senior football with a debut goal on loan at York City.

The Minstermen posted on X (19 October) after Thomas came off the bench to score in the 96th minute of work’s 4-0 victory over Ebbsfleet United, marking his maiden senior appearance with a goal.

Thomas only arrived at the LNER Community Stadium on loan from the Whites on 17 October, having excelled for United’s youth teams in 2024 and scoring six goals in five appearances so far this season.

The 20-year-old forward has been given his first chance at staking a claim in senior football with York, and Thomas’ first senior goal barely 21 minutes into his debut suggests he’s already more than ready.

Leeds United and Luca Thomas ready to go to the next level

While Thomas hasn’t gone far on his first loan move away from Thorp Arch – United’s Under-21s often play home matches in York – the details of his loan suggest that the club think he can aim higher.

The forward’s displays for United’s youth teams have long since seen him touted with a temporary move away to develop, but doing so in the fifth tier will only take Thomas so far.

However, Thomas’ loan to York is only a short-term one, with an expected January return likely to facilitate the youngster heading back out to another club in a higher division than the National League.

After achieving almost the dictionary definition of ‘hitting the ground running’ on his debut for the Minstermen, there’s no denying that Thomas has the ability to excel in the fifth step of English Football.

It’s far too early to tell how high Thomas’ fledgling career will go after one goal against Ebbsfleet United, but should the goals continue to flow, clubs higher up the leagues will certainly be taking notice.
