Leeds United must make Joe Snowdon contract decision after what he did

Leeds United Under-21s gem Joe Snowdon’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and the club must ensure that they offer him a new deal this summer.

The 20-year-old prospect signed a contract extension in January 2023, seeing his stay at Thorp Arch continue until the summer of 2024, which will soon be upon us. [Leeds United]

Despite a poor season from the youth team, the wide midfielder has continued to impress throughout the campaign and could even be considered for Leeds’ preseason tour.

Snowdon was on form once again, adding to his two goals for the season with a brace against Derby County U21s on Monday 15 April, as Reuben Lopata-White added a third for a 3-0 victory.

While that was just Scott Gardner’s side’s fourth victory in 17 matches, Farke cannot ignore the midfield talent, who is capable of playing on both flanks, as well as deputising as a centre-forward.

He has amassed over 60 appearances across U18s and U21s and, despite no loans away from Thorp Arch meaning a lack of senior experience, looks to be an exciting prospect for the future at Leeds.

Will Leeds United offer Joe Snowdon a new contract?

Snowdon’s first-team debut seems overdue, especially having signed a new deal at the club in January 2023 and having been on the fringe of the senior team before.

Farke’s current squad is filled to the brim with exciting talents, with the likes of Crysencio Summerville being named Championship Player of the Season, and Georginio Rutter and Ethan Ampadu being included in the EFL Team of the Year.

Taking Snowdon on a pre-season tour with the senior team would give the youngster a perfect opportunity to develop and learn, taking his game to the next level.

However, before that is possible, the Whites must hand the youngster a new contract to keep him at Thorp Arch, especially while Farke works out if he is up to the right standard ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

The likes of Archie Gray and Mateo Joseph show that there is a simple route for youngsters to be able to emerge as a first-team player from the academy, but only if Farke thinks they are good enough.

These are some very big names at Elland Road, not ones that Snowdon will be expected to live up to immediately, but he could certainly be a contender for a fringe position ahead of next season.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites need forward Georgina Rutter to start scoring soon if they are to earn promotion.
