Leeds United: Daniel Farke must take notice of Luca Thomas after what he did this week

Leeds United Under-21s have seen a sharp rise in form in recent weeks, and 19-year-old Luca Thomas has been at the very centre of proceedings.

The winger scored twice as the young Whites beat Newcastle United on Friday 19 April, taking inspiration from their 3-0 win over Derby County in the previous match.

The result against the Rams was their first victory since September, and Thomas leading them to a second consecutive win will have been incredibly exciting for those at Elland Road.

Thomas will be no stranger to Daniel Farke, having impressed with U18s and U21s. The winger has notched six goals and four assists this season, including an opening-day hat-trick against Brighton.

Despite being a natural right-winger, the 19-year-old is capable of deputising anywhere across the frontline, as well as dropping further into midfield.

Ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, he may be a name that Farke contemplates bringing into the first team to add some more attacking options to the Leeds bench.

Of course, the likes of Dan James, Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville are all huge names to live up to in the senior team, but Farke will only find out Thomas’ capabilities if he brings him through.

The German is not frightened when it comes to trusting youth, with Charlie Crew the latest prospect to be involved in the first team, joining Archie Gray.

In addition to this, 20-year-old Mateo Joseph, 22-year-old Summerville, and 22-year-old Georginio Rutter are all vital members of Farke’s team, despite being so young amid a Championship title race.

The senior staff, obviously, will need to make sure that bringing Thomas through to the senior team is the right decision. But after what he did against the Magpies on Friday, he certainly knows where the net is.
