5 Leeds United wonderkids to watch in 2025/26 – McDonald, new signing and more

Leeds United boast one of the best academies in England, with multiple big names progressing through the ranks.

Denis Irwin is perhaps the most successful, with the Irishman arguably Manchester United’s best-ever full-back.

More recently, Kalvin Phillips has been part of a Manchester City team that has dominated English football.

Now, MOT Leeds News has highlighted five players who will be aiming to follow a similar trajectory as they look to break into Daniel Farke’s team this season.

Rhys Chadwick – midfielder

Rhys Chadwick is easily one of Leeds’ best upcoming players. The versatile midfielder has proved himself to be clinical in front of goal.

In the 2024/25 campaign, the 18-year-old netted eight times and picked up 10 assists in just 24 matches.

As a result, Chadwick was named Leeds United Under-21s’ Players’ Player of the Season for 2024/25 for his performances.

Ollie Pickles – midfielder

Ollie Pickles is another outstanding upcoming midfielder at Leeds United.

The 17-year-old played 28 matches for the Peacocks last season, where he picked up five goals and three assists.

As a result, the defensive midfielder also received an award, claiming the Players’ Player of the Season award for the Under 18s.

Jayden Lienou – left-back

Jayden Lienou has recently signed for Leeds United from Manchester City.

The 17-year-old left-back has already represented Wales at the Under-18s level and is expected to join the Under 21s squad at the Yorkshire club.

Given Junior Firpo’s departure from Leeds, Lienou could be given a chance in the Peacocks’ first team at some point this season.

Josh McDonald – winger

Josh McDonald is another academy player with an excellent attacking output at Leeds.

In the 2023/24 campaign, the winger picked up 14 goal contributions in 28 matches.

While he didn’t match this with the Under 21s last season, if he can rekindle his form, the 18-year-old will become a star.

Rory Mahady – goalkeeper

The final player on this list is goalkeeper Rory Mahady.

Given all of the fuss about a first-team keeper at Leeds, the 17-year-old could be given his chance at some point.

Mahady was part of the squad that won the National League Cup, and recently signed a new contract until 2028.
