Willy Gnonto proves why he was subject of £23m bid in Leeds United draw

Wilfried Gnonto performed well for Leeds United in their draw against Portsmouth, showing why Everton have lodged a bid for him.

The Whites drew 3-3 with newly promoted Portsmouth at Elland Road in a frustrating start to their campaign.

Despite a negative result, Irish Mail journalist David Kent (11 August, page 62) has praised Gnonto for his performance after being linked away from Leeds.

He said: “Leeds were stunned but Gnonto shared the kind of quality which prompted Everton to bid £23million for his services earlier this summer, cutting inside and firing into the bottom corner immediately after the interval.

Wilfried Gnonto in positive Leeds United showing v Portsmouth

Daniel Farke wouldn’t have expected to have such a tough afternoon after going ahead through a Pascal Struijk penalty early on.

The game was eventually turned on its head as Leeds went behind thanks to a superb effort from Callum Lang.

This came in the same half where Ilia Gruev, Ethan Ampadu and Gnonto had all hit the woodwork within minutes of each other.

The Italy international made up for his missed opportunity early in the second half to level the game at 2-2.

Despite being substituted by Farke, the 20-year-old had a positive performance which may see some sides reignite their interest before transfer deadline day.

After losing Cysencio Summerville, the Whites may want to focus on making new signings rather than letting more star players depart.
