Wilfried Gnonto is waiting for a decision on his future at FC Zurich amid interest from Leeds United, according to Corriere dello Sport.
The Italian newspaper reported via their print edition on Tuesday (23 August, page 19) that Leeds’ bid of £4.2million remains on the table for Zurich, who are yet to accept as they’re looking for £6.7million for the 18-year-old Italy foreard.
It is understood that Gnonto isn’t sure of his future at Zurich going in the final days of the transfer window with a last-gasp exit seemingly still on the cards for the teenage sensation.
Race against time
It’s unfair of Zurich to do this to Gnonto.
He’s a young, 18-year-old forward who’s clearly got a future away from them and away from the Swiss Super League.
If they hadn’t crashed out of Champions League qualifying at the hands of Azerbaijani side Qarabag then fair enough but Gnonto’s contract expires next year and they need to sell him.
Leeds’ offer isn’t too short of their valuation but their valuation is always going to be too high for what club’s will be willing to pay as they’ll be able to sign the young Italian next year on a free transfer.
Zurich either need to take the millions from Leeds now. Or nothing from anyone next year.
They’ve started this season terribly, which could be why they’re worried about selling their star player before the summer transfer window closes.
Zurich won the Swiss Super League last season but their defence of the title has started with two draws, three defeats and just one goal scored in their first five games.
Gnonto has started three of those games but hasn’t completed 90 minutes in either of them.
Leeds need a new forward to add to their squad but will Gnonto be a proper senior player? Or will the young Italian be one for the future?
Either way, we need a striker for the present.
