Wilfried Gnonto transfer update emerges for January at Leeds United

Ben Jacobs has suggested Wilfried Gnonto will remain at Leeds United despite his lack of minutes recently as it would be very difficult to go back on his decision to stay in the summer.

The former talkSPORT commentator shared that after the summer transfer saga which saw the Italian refuse to train, he had apologised to Daniel Farke after sporting director Angus Kinnear played a big role in the mediation.

This, Jacobs claimed, would make for a very awkward situation if Gnonto were to push for a move again, although he also shared that the winger is not unhappy at Elland Road.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT on 12 November, Jacobs shared: “I don’t think the player is unhappy, despite reports, and I also think that Leeds still feel that he’s got a big role to play. So a January exit is not looking likely.

“It would be very difficult for Gnonto to push for anything mid-season after what happened last summer, having apologised to Daniel Farke and I know that Angus Kinnear played a big role in that kind of mediation as well.

“And from Leeds’ point of view, they want squad depth. They still feel that he can break into the side and earn a starting spot more regularly.

“And also, they want to know where they stand at the end of the season before making any decisions.”

The situation has been resolved

Whatever happened in the summer between Gnonto and Leeds, the situation has been resolved and all parties have moved on amicably. It seems unlikely that it would rear its head once more in January, despite a perceived lack of game time for the Italian.

Gnonto has found it difficult to force his way back into the side at Elland Road after suffering an injury which saw Daniel James thrive in his absence on the right-hand side of Farke’s three-pronged attack.

However, Gnonto remains a key part of Leeds’ plans, and the extent to which they went to keep him at the club in the summer can serve as proof of that. Over the course of the season, his influence on this team could be invaluable to a promotion push.

As we enter the busy winter months where teams will be expected to play at least two games per week, squad depth and the possibility for rotation becomes key, and having the likes of Gnonto as an option for that will be a huge boost to Leeds’ chances.
