Wilfried Gnonto exit development at Leeds United amid Everton transfer interest

Alan Myers has responded to a fan who has asked if a deal to bring Leeds United attacker Wilfried Gnonto to Everton is “dead” admitting he’s not “expecting it” to be done.

Sean Dyche’s side are understood to be eager to sign the Italian winger ahead of the transfer deadline, but it now appears to be unlikely that the Toffees will manage to meet the Whites’ demands [Yorkshire Evening Post, 27 July].

That has led to some speculation that there is no chance the 20-year-old will move to Goodison Park, but Sky Sports journalist Myers has refused to rule out the possibility of a deal at some point this summer.

Replying to a fan on X on Monday (29 July) who asked: “Gnonto deal more or less dead?” Myers said: “Nothing is ever over till it’s over, but I’m not expecting it atm.”

Will Wilfried Gnonto exit Leeds United amid Everton transfer interest?

While there is still a chance Gnonto will leave Leeds United before the summer transfer window slams shut, journalists from both the Whites’ side and the Toffees appear to be losing confidence that the deal will occur.

Everton do have money to spend regardless of the ongoing takeover situation on Merseyside, but they are not in a position to be able to overpay for players and they deem Leeds’ asking price to be above their valuation.

That could of course change in the final weeks of the transfer window, especially if big-money players depart Goodison Park. But Daniel Farke’s side are under no pressure to sell this summer and therefore can stand by their valuation.

Hopefully, Gnonto will be happy to remain at Elland Road for another season and not look to force his way out as he did at this stage of last summer’s transfer window.

If he can remain fit, available and happy on Merseyside this season he could be a determining factor in the race for promotion back to the Premier League and that is exactly why the Whites cannot let him depart on the cheap.
