Why Sebastiaan Bornauw could now leave Leeds United in urgent new transfer

Question marks continue to surround Sebastiaan Bornauw's time at Leeds United.

The Belgian only signed from Wolfsburg last summer, but was used as squad depth mainly at Elland Road by Daniel Farke.

With a history of injuries, Bornauw made a good enough impact when required in the Premier League.

But, since January, there have been several links for Bornauw to pack his bags and move on from England.

They are mainly for a return to Germany too.

With FC Koln still heavily interested, a new contender is on the block from the Bundesliga for Leeds to deal with.

Who could sign Sebastiaan Bornauw?

It isn't actually known if Leeds would entertain interest for Bornauw.

From the outside looking in, the Whites can't afford to, as when they play three central defenders, he is their only senior cover.

But, modern day football often shows that a player always wants more.

And now, Hamburger Abendblatt has reported that Hamburg are newcomers in the race for Bornauw.

The local German outlet state that an urgent replacement is wanted for Luka Vuskovic, who has signed permanently for Brighton after his loan spell in Germany from Tottenham.

Described as a "star player", Bornauw is one of three options for Hamburg, with the door said to be possibly open for his departure in LS11.

For that to happen, another central defender would need to be signed.

How has Sebastiaan Bornauw performed in pre-season?

Leeds have just returned from a positive camp in the United States.

The Whites won a tournament including Wrexham, Sunderland and Liverpool, beating their Premier League opposition.

Bornauw featured in all three games, coming off the bench early against Liverpool at left-back to replace the injured Gabriel Gudmundsson.

He put in a very positive display as Leeds came back to score four second-half goals and win 4-2 in Chicago.

Of course, pre-season won't reveal everything, but Farke does show trust in Bornauw when he is required.

Much will depend on what system is used at Elland Road from next season, with four and five-men defences both possible.

Leeds are likely to stick with what worked so well last season at first, meaning that, for now, Bornauw is going nowhere, regardless of the growing interest from abroad.
