Why Harry Gray's latest Leeds exit is already different as Sheffield Wednesday arrival date set

Published on

Harry Gray's latest Leeds United loan exit is set to go through this week, with Sheffield Wednesday ready to integrate him into the side.

The Owls have seen off competition from at least one other club - Huddersfield Town - for Gray's signature.

Gray, who has a strong family connection running right through Leeds, previously spent time on loan with Rotherham United last season.

Still aged just 17, the young striker has plenty of room for development before he can become a success at Elland Road.

He will now embark on the next stage of that journey at nearby Sheffield Wednesday.

And this latest loan exit already seems different to his previous one given the circumstances surrounding it.

Harry Gray to be at St George's Park this week in latest update

Gray is rated incredibly highly at Leeds, just like his brother Archie was prior to joining Tottenham.

Like Archie, it is hoped that Harry can break into Leeds' first team at a young age.

That won't be for at least another year, however, as his loan exit at Wednesday is on the verge of going through.

In an update shared by The Star on Monday afternoon, it is reported that Gray will be present at St George's Park this week to train with his new teammates.

The deal has not technically been concluded yet, but it is clearly close if Wednesday intend for him to link-up with them at England's training HQ.

It marks a contrast to when he had a rather mixed loan stint at Rotherham earlier this year.

That deal went through midway through the campaign, with Gray joining a struggling side with little time to find his feet.

This time around, he has a month or so to get to know his new surroundings before the Owls' campaign officially begins.

Leeds' status could hamper Gray's development

Unlike with his brother, Harry is having to break into a Leeds side that are currently in the Premier League.

The hope is that the Whites retain their top-flight status for many more years to come, making Gray's task a lot more difficult.

Being given a chance in the Championship is one thing; being used in the Premier League is a whole different ball game.

But that is a conversation for down the line. Right now, the only thing Gray needs to concentrate on is making a mark for Sheffield Wednesday.

Andy Wright once told The Athletic that Gray's finishing for such a young player "isn't normal".

Should he showcase that at a decent level in League One, he will have a far stronger platform to push on when he stakes a claim for a starting spot at Leeds.
